African art and female effigies from the Ivory Coast. This African statue of the Attie is a classic representation of the Queen, with a long ringed neck, upright arms, oversized hands with long fingers and a headdress composed of three cylindrical buns. A typical recurring feature in African tribal Atti sculpture.
The lagoon populations of the eastern Ivory Coast are mainly composed of the Attié, Akyé, Ebrié and Abouré. Their sculptures have many similarities.
Their history is marked by stormy relations with the Portuguese, Dutch and English settlers in this coastal region where there was an intense gold and slave trade.
