The Significance of Caryatid Stools in Luba Kingship Rituals

The caryatid stool, a symbolic representation of Luba rule, was used as a spiritual dwelling for the king’s essence. The female figure supporting the seat embodies matrilineal descent, essential for legitimizing the monarchy. One important trait reflected on this piece is that the blending of masculine and feminine symbolism reflected the belief that power encompassed both genders. In addition, these stools were rarely utilized, often wrapped and safeguarded, only brought out for special occasions such as the inauguration of Luba leaders. Furthermore, during these ceremonies, the stool, placed on a leopard skin, marked the moment when the new ruler assumed authority, addressed as “mulopwe” for the first time, signifying his reign over the sacred bloodline.
